Iquitos, a city located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, held the unfortunate world record of first reaching an 80% infection rate during the pandemic. The horror of contagion and death also brought with it a subsequently denied hope – that this would lead to herd immunity. A situation that was never scientifically validated. It took us by surprise that amid so much destruction and death, the impulse of resilience persisted, and with it emerged our client. Their research center, vital in the validation of the Janssen/J&J vaccine, had played a significant role in the global fight against the pandemic.
The challenging task of designing and constructing in phases without interrupting the operation of a health center in constant evolution posed a significant challenge. Operational health units were arranged subsequently and expansively in 3 main phases. Proposed elements include emergency areas, a surgical center with 3 operating rooms, an obstetric center with 2 delivery rooms, 37 rooms, 23 consultation rooms, but the focus remains on the investigative nature, the essence of the organization. This is especially important considering the adjacency to the Amazon and the presence of tropical diseases, leaving a vast space for research.
